Excerpt

“Hi, hi, sorry I’m late. I overslept.” Brody McAlister barreled in the door of the Eastside Animal Hospital and skidded to a screeching halt. The place was awash with people, animals, and noise. A family sat huddled in the corner, a boy sobbed into his father’s shoulder, the mother sat with a stunned look on her face, holding a baby. Several dogs barked, a cat in its carrier yowled, trying to claw its way out. A teenaged boy sat on the floor in the corner with a young python coiled around his head.

“Dr. McAlister, thank God you’re here,” the receptionist said. “An emergency came in, two dogs hit by a car. Dr. Trammel is working on them in back with Carl.”

“Thanks.” Brody nodded and took off running. In contrast to the confusion in the lobby, the examination room remained quiet. David and Carl stood under the hot surgical lights.

“Glad you made it, Brody. Scrub and glove quickly, will you? I’m not sure we can save this one.” David stopped to blot his sweating forehead with the back of his sleeve.

Brody ran to the sink and started lathering her hands.

“Annette told me there were two.” Hot water gushed out of the faucet. The room smelled of anesthesia, blood, and despair.

“There wasn’t anything we could do for him.” David nodded his head toward the wall. “Broken neck.” A medium sized dog lay on an examining table, his head at a sharp, unnatural angle, his pink tongue lolling out of his frozen bloody mouth. Brody hated to lose an animal, ever, and death mind echoes were the worst. She swallowed hard. Her eyes burned with salty tears and she tasted burger in the back of her throat.

Straightening her back, Brody finished scrubbing, put on a mask and gloves and went to help David try and save the dog.
