Excerpt:

The phone rang just as the alarm went off. A hand snaked out from under the sheet, pounding on top of the alarm until it stopped.  Long fingers then patted the night stand a few times until it reached the receiver and pulled it under the sheet.

“What?” a sleepy voice asked.

“Juanita? Wake up, girl. I know your alarm went off already.”

“Yes,” was all her sleepy mind could relay.

“I know you’re tired, so am I, but we are at the end of our ER rotation today and we still have to be on top of our game. We can’t get caught slipping on our last day. The good news is, if we can get through today, we’re off for the next four days.”

“Yes, yes, I’m awake. Wait, who is this?”

The friendly voice on the line chuckled. “Come on, girl, you ain’t that tired. I’ll be there in an hour to get you so be ready and put some coffee on.”

The phone rested on her head. She listened to the dial tone for a few more minutes before flipping the sheet back and returning it to its cradle. Juanita shook her head, confused by the brief conversation. In the bathroom, her body went through its morning ritual on auto pilot. Exiting the shower, she wrapped a towel around herself and pulled another over her head before stepping in front of the mirror. She wrung the water from her hair, removing the towel from her head and face. A scream tore from her lungs.

Staring back at her in the mirror was the reflection of a woman she hadn’t seen in over fifty years. Wide-eyed, she reached out, touching her face in the mirror.

“Oh my goodness,” she breathed. “What has happened?” She ran her fingers through her rich auburn curls and gingerly touched her neck. “He did it,” she exclaimed. Her voice grew louder as the excitement of what had transpired sank in. “He sent me back. I have another chance!” Juanita leaned on the counter for a closer look at the glow in her wrinkle-free brown skin and the sparkle of youth in her dark eyes. Suddenly, she stood up straight and snatched her towel off. With an ear-to-ear grin and hands on firm hips, she spun around to view her youthful and lush body from every angle.

“Yes!”

Ms Littlejohn uses mythology in a unique way, almost like time travel, but not. She gives Juanita realistic reactions, responses, and wisdom that comes with a lifetime of experience.rnMs. Littlejohn gives an eighty-five year old woman a twist of fate ending I find refreshing and fun. Good read!
