Blurb:

At forty-two and facing middle age, Olivia Wilson gets shocking news from her physician.  The extra fifty pounds she’s gained since her divorce has brought on sleep apnea, and now she needs to wear some ugly apparatus at night to help her breathe.  The clerk at the medical supply store takes her breath completely away, but why in the world would someone as handsome as Austin Reed date a fat, lonely woman who looks like Jacques Cousteau at night?

Excerpt:

Olivia clutched the top of her purse in a fisted hand and opened the door to the medical supply house.  Already her cheeks burned like she’d been in the sun too long, and she hadn’t even faced the clerk yet.  At seeing the counter vacant, she considered turning around, getting back in her car, and forgetting the whole ordeal, but that wouldn’t solve her problem.  The word “death” kept ringing in her ears.  Was pride more important than life?  Sometimes she wondered, with her own existence so empty and sad.

Her hand hovered over the silver bell with a note that said, “ring for service.”  Olivia took a deep breath, pressed the plunger, and then grimaced at the annoying tinkle.  Too late to turn back now, she squared her shoulders.

The curtains behind the counter parted, and her breath hitched at the handsome man who strode through them.  “Hello, may I help you?”

Dark hair, blue eyes, broad shoulders, a little extra weight, but still a piece of eye candy. Her quick scan of him didn’t miss a thing. Latching onto the counter’s edge, she steadied her weak knees.  “Y-yes…I…I…”  Words failed her, and she shoved the wrinkled papers toward him.

He smoothed out the crumpled sheets.  “Ah, so you’re Olivia. I’m Austin Reed, and I received Dr. Ray’s fax. I have everything ready for you.”

She dipped her chin.  “This is rather embarrassing.”

“You shouldn’t feel that way.” The clerk’s tone was sympathetic. “This is a medical situation and nothing to beat yourself up over. This store services more people in the community than you can imagine.”

She looked up and smiled.  “I never thought I’d be one of those people.  In fact, I had no idea I had sleep apnea.”

“Most people don’t, but I’m sure you’ll feel a difference once you start sleeping with the mask on.”

She gave a shuddering head-shake.  “That’s what creeps me out.”

“The mask?  It’s really not that horrible, but ladies usually have vanity issues about wearing one.  Is that what’s bothering you, or are you really afraid?”  He tilted his head.

“A little of both, I think.”

“A pretty lady like you shouldn’t worry yourself over sleeping in something that will help you breathe better.  Let me get your equipment and explain it all to you.”  He disappeared between the curtains.

Had he just called her a pretty lady?  Of course he had.  He was a salesman, after all.  No one with his good looks would be interested in her any further than the monthly fee she had to pay him to look ridiculous.  Her mouth turned dryer than the Sahara, and she fished in her bag for a piece of gum.

OUR READERS REVIEWS:

Elixir is fantasy at its best. Katie Caroll draws us into her world with ease, her well-polished writing style and flow holding us captive until the end. I especially liked the relationship between Katora and her sister Kylene, obviously drawn from real life. I can't wait to read the sequel.

GOODREADS READER REVIEW

I was pleasantly surprised when I opened this very charming and witty book to read on the skytrain. But I have to say it was kind of embarrassing. I couldn't stop giggling out loud at Maggie Lyon's humour. People kept looking at me, and I tried my hardest to hold in the laughter, but it was impossible. What a delightful story! What child wouldn't love this. It's a story for 6-10 year olds. It's a great book to read to your children when they're young or by themselves when they're older. If your child likes Geronimo Stilton, they'll fall in love with Dewie the little dragon and his friend Jones the toad. I hope Maggie Lyons will turn this into a series.

Joy Smith pulled me into the story on the very first pages. Fast moving, first I hated Victor, than I love him, than I hated until I loved him. And Marisol with her guarded heart had me hoping throughout that she'd open it again to love.

I loved her descriptions. They created such visuals, I felt I was traveling and discovering Colombia with Victor.

Ms. Smith writes believable, flawed characters that I wound up cheering and caring for on each page. I can't wait to read her next book. Goodreads Reader Review - Five Stars

"...murder, mystery and intrigue..plus did I mention our hero is a witch? Tex and his best friend Olivia are brilliant characters, really well written and I love tex's dad. Can't wait to read more about tex in the future! -Amazon Reader Review

I really enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot of this novel. From Annabelle putting her life in danger when running away from Boarding School where she has lived since the age of five to her tenacious pursuit in finding clues as to her origins.

She is rescued by Roland, who is too much of a gentleman not to help the intriguing young lady. I relished the suspense of the reciprocal desire between Roland and Belle which is thwarted by misunderstanding after misunderstanding and prevents them achieving mutual fulfilment. The reader yearns for the truth to replace the false pretences and for Roland and Belle to overcome each other's prejudices.
Rosemary Morris' major and minor characters spring to life. I sympathised with Annabelle and found Roland charming. Apart from this, Rosemary's great attention to every aspect of the Regency era is impressive.

False Pretences is a ripping read and I look forward to reading this author's next novel. - F.Way- Amazon Review
