Excerpt
“Are you okay, sir?”
Jacob lay on his back. The bright rays fell behind the silhouette of a face, so he lowered his arm, noticing a young black woman staring down at him. Wearing a navy blue suit and her dark hair tied back in a bun, she bent over and squinted.
“Pardon,” Jacob said, confused.
“Are you okay?” she repeated.
Jacob wasn’t sure what to say. He turned his head to the side, realizing he was on the sidewalk of a downtown street. Cars and trucks whizzed by only a few feet away.
“Where am I?” he inquired.
“Cottage Grove.”
Jacob’s eyes tightened. “Cottage Grove? I’ve never heard of it. How far is it from Atlanta?”
“Atlanta?” The woman kneeled down. “I think you might have a concussion. Do you know what your name is?”
“Jacob.”
