Facing each other, Jacob and Dinah sat at a small table in one of the interview rooms adjacent to the custody area. He was curious why she wanted to speak to him alone. What did she have to say that couldn’t be said in front of the others? Jacob kept glancing over his shoulder to see if anyone passed by the window.
“No one’s going to come looking for us in here,” she said, seeming to pick up on Jacob’s nervousness.
“If you say so.” He shifted his gaze and focused on Dinah. “What is it you need to tell me?”
“First of all, the reason I’m making you privy to this information is because you’re probably one of the few people, and the only one here, who might believe me.”
“I try to keep an open mind.”
She nodded. “I remember hearing about a kidnapping case you worked a few years back. It was out of state, and you handled it on your own.”
“I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I wasn’t out there on business. The case literally fell into my lap.”
“Yeah, well, the powers-that-be have been very tight-lipped, but I’ve heard through channels that some strange stuff went on.”
“To say the least. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around it.”
“But that’s the point,” Dinah said. “You’ve experienced things others haven’t, and I need that frame of mind here.”
