“What I learned on my ‘vacation’ to the Brazilian Amazon” by Olivia Mitchell Byers.

-        Most things are bitey.

-        Jungles don’t have room service.

-        Dinosaurs are mostly jerks.

-        So are headhunters.

-        Corruption is universal.

-        And they don’t speak Spanish here. Who knew?

“Okay, to be fair,”

-        The food was great.

-        The jungle was absolutely gorgeous.

-        You never know where you’ll find a new friend.

-        People can change.

My arrival triggers the perfect storm of simmering rivalries, vengeful headhunters, and deadly poachers – all while I’m escorting the youngest son of her powerful mentor, Aerin. What could possibly go wrong? What didn’t?

It was still spitting rain when I landed with a squish in the middle of camp, as Roz showed Yuri, Matthew and Korembi something on her laptop the four of them were laughing.

“How did it go?” Yuri asked cautiously. “Olivia, did you know you have blood and red and blue feathers in your hair?”

I touched my hair. I thought it was just wet from the rain. Gross. “Wouldn’t surprise me,” I said. “It’s not my blood.”

“Who be getting blood in your hair, Olivia?” asked Korembi.

“Not who, what,” I said. “Raptor. They started it. Don’t tell me killing one is like shooting an eagle or something and I’m about to be arrested. I’m not going anywhere without dry clothes and a shower.”

“Ah. Not to worry. It happens. I’ll fill out the form for you. You just have to sign it,” said Korembi. “Self-defense resulting in raptor fatality.”

Yuri came out of our tent with a shower bucket and a clear plastic bag of clothes. “Come on,” she said. “Let’s get you cleaned up.”
